Wire Mesh Standards Explained: ASTM, BS & ISO

Wire mesh standards vary by product and region. ASTM A1064 covers steel wire and welded wire reinforcement for concrete in the US system (it replaced the older, now-withdrawn A185 and A82). BS 4483 is the current British Standard for steel fabric reinforcement. ISO 9044 covers industrial woven wire cloth — a different product category from welded reinforcement. Knowing which applies to your product helps you read a certificate correctly and avoid buying to an outdated spec.

Why standards matter beyond "having a certificate"

A certificate is only useful if it’s the right standard for the product you’re buying, and if it’s current. Standards get revised and sometimes withdrawn — citing an old number on a drawing or a supplier quote doesn’t mean the material meets today’s requirements. Here’s what each standard actually covers.

ASTM A1064 (welded wire reinforcement, US system)

ASTM A1064/A1064M is the standard specification for steel wire and welded wire reinforcement — plain and deformed — for concrete. It consolidated and replaced the older ASTM A185 and ASTM A82, both withdrawn in 2013. If you see A185 or A82 referenced on an old drawing or spec sheet, treat it as the superseded predecessor of A1064 and confirm current compliance with your supplier.

A1064 sets requirements including wire diameter tolerances, weld shear strength between intersecting wires, and mesh spacing — the properties that determine whether welded mesh performs as reinforcement is meant to.

BS 4483 (steel fabric reinforcement, UK/British system)

BS 4483 is the British Standard for steel fabric used to reinforce concrete — specifying requirements for factory-made, machine-welded steel fabric. The standard is periodically revised; always confirm you’re working to the current edition, since older editions can differ on tolerances and testing requirements. Ask your supplier which edition their material and certification reference.

ISO 9044 (industrial woven wire cloth — a different category)

ISO 9044 covers technical requirements and tests for industrial woven wire cloth — square-aperture cloth in steel, stainless steel, or nonferrous metals used for sieving, filtration and similar applications. This is a genuinely different product family from welded reinforcement mesh, so it’s worth not confusing the two: if you’re buying woven mesh for filtration or screening, ISO 9044 is the relevant reference; if you’re buying welded mesh for concrete reinforcement, ASTM A1064 or BS 4483 are the relevant ones.

What to actually check when a supplier quotes a standard
